Meet Our Robots: Bringing Speed, Precision and Flexibility to the Likarda Lab

Likarda invests in robotics to ensure that our researchers have the latest technology at their fingertips to automate our testing procedures when applicable. Our two robotic options mean better scalability, and they allow for running more compounds, microplates and experiments in a shorter amount of time.

Since Likarda uses multifaceted early-phase research tools and processes, our laboratory required two types of robots. The first is Hamilton’s Microlab Star. Prior to its installation, all of our work was done by hand, using regular laboratory pipettes to run experiments, thus limiting drug discovery experiments to 20 compounds per day. Since our “Star” has come into our laboratory to perform liquid handling (pipetting), our researchers can run complicated experiments seamlessly. This capability is key to create drug synergy experiments where an endless number of drug combinations can be tested, as well as in multiplex assays where several assays can be combined into a single plate.

Other benefits of our Hamilton’s Microlab Star robot include:

  • Choice of microplate sizes, ranging from 6- to 384-well
  • Aseptic processing via HEPA filtering enabling cell-based studies
  • Assay replications without introducing human variability
  • Running multiple microplates at a time
  • Testing up to 200 compounds in a day (in current configuration)
  • Configuration options to conduct a variety of experiments
  • Quick project completion at a lower cost

Given the multi-well plates used in our contract research, having multi-channel pipettes are essential to workflow. Our smaller-scale robot, INTEGRA’s VIAFLO ASSIST, runs a single plate at a time for preliminary experiments, early assay development or pilot studies. It removes the risk of less reproducible results, and its electronic pipettes increase the reproducibility of prolonged pipetting protocols such as serial dilutions, plate filling and reagent addition.
