Dr. Francis Karanu, Likarda’s Director of Cell Therapy and Research and Development was named the 2022 recipient of the Newton Universal Legendary Award (NULA) and the Dr. Julius Wayne Dudley Award for Humanity through Medical Transformation.
These awards honored Dr. Karanu for his scientific advancements to treat type 1 diabetes with a cell therapy, as well as his continued humanitarian and philanthropic work. Prior to joining Likarda, Dr. Karanu worked internationally for Johnson & Johnson in a diabetes research and peer education role in Africa. As the team leader in this role in Sub-Saharan Africa, he was charged with clinical diabetes research, education, and management, as well as commercialization of new diabetes management tools. He worked with diabetes specialists, nurses, diabetes educators, pharmacists, and other stakeholders to address diabetes issues in developing economies.
Dr. Karanu has also undertaken other humanitarian efforts including seeking and shipping medical relief supplies to low-income communities in Africa (Kenya), as well as participating in support of education for underprivileged children. Some of the international philanthropic Institutions that Dr. Karanu has worked with include Direct Relief International and Project CURE.
These two awards presented to Dr. Karanu were established by the Socio Economic Development Foundation of Boston in 2019 with the goal of honoring the everyday person who significantly contributes to humanity.
Likarda Recognized for Contribution to Society through Scientific Advancement
We’re pleased to share that Likarda received the 2022 Newton Universal Legendary Award (NULA) for our contribution to society through scientific advancement. Established by the Socio Economic Development Foundation of Boston in 2019 this award recognizes individuals and organizations that work in the performing arts, education, television, and science with a goal to share their accomplishments and expertise to a larger audience.
